P.H. Coates Willow Charcoal
Coates charcoal has a velvety smooth stroke and a rich, deep black hue. These willow sticks are a versatile and indispensable drawing tool for artists. The Coates family has specialized in the cultivation of willow in Southwest England since 1819. They have been producing the world’s finest willow charcoal for artists for over 40 years from these renewable willows. The willow is sorted by diameter and burned in its natural shape, not compressed like most charcoals.

FLAX art & design is a genuine Oakland institution. Opening their first store in 1938, they're now on their 3rd generation of family ownership and have recently relocated to a beautiful new Downtown location that could best be described as a "toy store for artists." 80 years in and they're still putting art and community front and center. You can visit them at their own site here, or find more of their products right here on Keep Oakland Alive.
